King Jigme Singye of Bhutan made headlines in December by suddenly abdicating and handing the throne to his Oxford-educated son, Jigme Geshar. He has also pledged to grant some measure of democracy by holding elections in 2008. He has not, however, explained the motivation behind his precipitate action, says Murari R. Sharma.

Una serie di demolizioni effettuate dalle autorità a Chennai nel Tamil Nadu (India) ha lasciato senza casa circa 30.000 persone, tra cui circa 5.000 studenti - riporta International Alliance of Inhabitants (Iai). Tre persone sono morte, tra le quali una bambina di tre anni che è affogata, mentre un altro milione di persone, abitanti sul suolo pubblico, sono minacciate di sfratto imminente in tutto lo stato del Tamil Nadu. "Le persone che vivevano nell’area del lago Porur sono state sfrattate a forza, senza nessun preavviso da parte della polizia, giunta in gran numero con ruspe e bulldozer per demolire ogni insediamento. E’ stato uno shock" - denunciano le associazioni che invitano a firmare l'appello online.
