30.03.2005 Activists accuse Coca-Cola of creating severe water shortages in India, polluting the soil and groundwater, and selling drinks containing dangerously high levels of pesticides, among other crimes. In Colombia, the company is charged with complicity in the murder, torture and intimidation of labor union organizers at its bottling plants. A speaking tour to hold Coca-Cola accountable will take place throughout the month of April in the U.S.

Americans Touched by Colombian Delegation's Message of Peace

30.03.2005 All the congregants of Colombian Pastor Adelina Zu��ga's church are displaced victims of war. Driven from their homes, they set up a new church on a garbage dump, cleaned up dirty areas of the city to establish community gardens, and are now helping other victims of war. They brought their stories to the living rooms and the halls of Congress of the United States recently.

Speaking Tour: Holding Coca Cola Accountable

From April 4-19, a Speaking Tour to Hold Coca-Cola Accountable will hold public events on the East Coast, including New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Philadelphia, to demand justice for communities in Colombia and India that are being adversely impacted by Coca-Cola's practices. The tour will also stop at Coca-Cola's shareholder meeting in Wilmington on April 19. In India, Coca-Cola is guilty of creating severe water shortages, polluting the soil and groundwater, distributing toxic waste as fertilizer to farmers, and selling sub-standard drinks in the Indian market which contain high levels of pesticides, sometimes higher than 30 times those allowed by European Union standards. In Colombia, Coca-Cola is charged with complicity in the murder, torture and intimidation of labor union organizers at Coca-Cola bottling plants.

28.03.2005 During his recent trip to Latin America, U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld expressed grave concerns over Venezuela's plan to purchase 100,000 AK-47s, especially considering the country's porous border with Colombia, which has been engaged in a brutal guerilla war for 40 years. Some think Rumsfeld's comments are just sour grapes, as the rifles are being bought from Russia instead of the U.S.

28.03.2005 "La morte della foresta � la fine della nostra vita". Cos� dicevano suor Dorothy Stang, il sindacalista Soares da Costa Filho, il contadino Cl�udio Branco e il leader ecologista Dionisio Ribeiro Filho: tutti freddati nei primi mesi di quest'anno con una raffica di colpi. Il disboscamento illegale, intanto, ha portato alla distruzione di quasi il 60 percento dell'originaria a foresta Amazzonica: in due anni sono spariti 24 mila chilometri quadrati di foresta pluviale, un'area vasta come la Lombardia. La terra, per�, continua ad essere concentrata nelle mani di pochi latifondisti e allevatori. Sono quasi 12 milioni i senza terra brasiliani costretti a sopravvivere alla meglio facendo i braccianti nelle fazendas dei grandi proprietari terrieri.

America latina: ricordando Romero, mentre continua l'assassinio

25.03.2005 Nel 25� anniversario dell'assassinio di mons. Oscar Arnulfo Romero, l'arcivescovo di San Salvador ucciso mentre celebrava la Messa, il Salvador lo ha ricordato oggi con un pellegrinaggio silenzioso fino alla Cattedrale. Gli assassini di monsignor Romero non sono stati ancora individuati, ma una Commissione dell'Onu concluse alcuni anni fa che a ordinare l'omicidio fu Roberto D'Abuisson, fondatore degli "squadroni della morte" e del partito allora al governo, l'Alleanza Repubblicana Nazionalista (Arena). Il mensile di Pax Christi, Mosaico di Pace dedica l'intero dossier del mese di marzo alla figura di mons. Romero. Il recente assassinio della missionaria suor Dorothy Stang nel Par� (Brasile) e di vari leader sindacalisti ricorda a tutti come i giusti in America Latina continuano a pagare un altissimo prezzo di sangue.

Colombia: voce alle �comunit� di pace� militarizzate

21.03.2005 A Roma si � tenuto un sit-in difronte all�Ambasciata colombiana per denunciare il massacro sofferto dalle comunit� di pace colombiane ed il tentativo di militarizzarne il territorio da parte del ministero della Difesa. Di fronte a questa minaccia le Comunit� riaffermano con forza il loro diritto alla neutralit� nei confronti di qualsiasi attore armato prospettando un eventuale sfollamento forzato. Sono oltre 150 il numero delle vittime all�interno delle comunit� di pace e 350 le violazioni dei diritti umani, tutti crimini rimasti nella totale impunit�. Nel clima di tensione che regna nel paese giunge la buona notizia della liberazione di Luz Perly C�rdoba, la dirigente sindacale contadina colombiana, detenuta da oltre un anno nel carcere femminile del Buen Pastor di Bogot�. Con lei � stato liberato anche Juan de Jes�s Guti�rrez, altro dirigente dell�Associazione Contadina di Arauca.

Ecuador: A Sud, l'Agip viola i diritti fondamentali

16.03.2005 Secondo l'inchiesta pubblicata in questa giorni dal Secolo XIX, l' Eni viola i diritti fondamentali dell'uomo: il diritto alla salute, il diritto delle popolazioni indigene di vivere nei propri territori ancestrali, la tutela dell'ambiente. L'organizzazione 'A Sud' aveva gi� denunciato nel 2001 l'incostituzionalit� del Contratto firmato tra Huaroani e Agip, in occasione della Campagna contro la costruzione dell'OCP, un'oleodotto di 500 chilometri che attraversa 11 aree naturali fragili e zone a rischio sismico, vulcanico e idrogeologico, costruito al di fuori di ogni norma d'impatto ambientale violando i diritti delle popolazioni indigene e contadine. A Sud in questi giorni ha risposto all'appello delle comunit� che denunciano lo stato di contaminazione dell'ambiente, i danni alle coltivazioni,ai pascoli e alla salute umana.

Bolivia: resta Mesa ma la protesta continua

09.03.2005 Il Parlamento della Bolivia ha respinto con voto unanime le dimissioni presentate dal presidente Carlo Mesa: rester� dunque al potere fino all'agosto del 2007, quando scadr� il suo mandato. A sostenere questa decisione un accordo firmato da tutti i partiti boliviani tranne i due partiti di opposizione di Evo Morales e di Felipe Quispe. I leader dei movimenti hanno dichiarato che le dimissioni presentate sono una chiara minaccia al popolo boliviano che rischia di portare alla rinuncia dei diritti legittimi dei suoi idrocarburi. Il parlamento ha approvato un disegno di legge che aumenta le quote degli introiti derivanti dallo sfruttamento dei giacimenti di petrolio e di gas naturale. Sul tema si era tenuto un discusso referendum lo scorso luglio che era stato impostato in modo da non incidere sulle attivita' delle multinazionali da decenni impegnate a spremere il paese.
