HIV/AIDS in Eritrea
Eritrea has developed reasonable capacity to combat HIV/AIDS and the country experiences a relatively low prevalence rate. But a combination of adverse circumstances - extreme poverty, droughts, and thousands of soldiers being disbanded - creates risks which may be difficult to control.
Andrew Petkun a photojournalist in the United States who has been documenting the HIV/AIDS crisis in Africa recently visited Eritrea.

Ethiopia and Eritrea UN Peacekeeping Forces have begun training soldiers in both countries as well as their own peacekeeping troops and civilians in how to combat HIV and prevent it's spread.

Official statistics indicate that the incidence of HIV/AIDS in Eritrea is only 3% of the population. Misinformation and lack of awareness, however threaten to worsen the situation.
