South Africa is associated especially with the recent transition to democracy, after years of oppressive apartheid rule. Nelson Mandela, a true statesman, advocated reconciliation and commitment to building a new South Africa for all, enabled by a progressive constitution. But despite the democratic handover to the government of President Thabo Mbeki, doubts linger as to whether racial and economic divides have improved. Confronted also by a burgeoning HIV/AIDS crisis, initial optimism has given way to sober recognition of the challenge of long term economic performance.
