Zambia: Politics

Zambian politics after the last general elections have centred around the courts. The election results of 2001 were marred by accusations of rigging and electoral fraud. A few members of parliament have lost their seats in courts after petition failed by loosing candidates were upheld by the courts. The country is now approaching the next general elections in 2006 with conflicts about using a new consitution for next year's elections.
Zambia's President Levy Mwanawasa has bowed to pressure and agreed that a constituent assembly would adopt the new constitution, as demanded by civil society and the opposition.

Zambia’s 40th independence anniversary falls on 24th October 2004. Forty years after Zambia attained its independence from the British government the country is faced with high levels of poverty, unemployment, HIV and AIDS and many economic woes. The politicians are, however, asking the nation to come together and celebrate the peace and freedom that Zambia has enjoyed for forty years.

Zambia Director Of Public Prosecution - Mukelebai
The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) has said it is concerned over the government's apparent "lack of regard" for the "rule of law." LAZ's comments came in the wake of President Levy Mwanawasa's move to dismiss the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Mukelabai Mukelabai, allegedly unconstitutionally.
