At a national Other Campaign gathering in Mexico City on May 29, Subcomandante Marcos called on members of the Other Campaign across the country to gather in Mexico City on June 30 for two days of debate and, on election day, Sunday July 2, to “interrupt into the calendar of the elite [los de arriba] with civil and peaceful organizing and mobilizations.”

The achievement of the MDGs, in the case of Nicaragua - as in the case of many developing countries - is severely constrained by the relationship of the country with the IMF. It is estimated that under current IMF conditionalities only half of the MDG targets will be met in Nicaragua.

Much attention has focused lately on the Bolivian government's nationalization of the country's hydrocarbon resources. Bolivia's policy change follows up the Venezuelan government's systematic renegotiation of contracts with foreign petroleum companies which dramatically increased revenue available to benefit Venezuela's people.

The test of a televised debate is not what the candidates say but how they do. This makes the end result look more like soap opera auditions than a public forum of ideas. It is doubtful that Tuesday night's spectacle swayed much of the coveted “undecided vote.” Predictably, everyone pronounced their own candidate the “winner.
