Poverty and overpopulation are two of Mexico's biggest challenges. In Mexico, Population Media Center (PMC) is working with the Adolescent Orientation Center (CORA) of Mexico to produce a series of radio mini-serials mixed with talk shows in the five states of Mexico with the highest fertility rates. These programs have been developed by young people and are aimed at youth audiences.

The Brazilian government is considering giving private parties the right to limited forestry exploitation in the Amazon. The parliamentary debate on the issue promises to be a hot one. It is not a matter of privatization, but rather one of ''consolidating national sovereignty'' over the Brazilian Amazon, the Environment Ministry's head of forests and biodiversity told Tierramérica.

The Haitian interim government failed to ensure justice and to demonstrate its willingness to tackle impunity effectively, said Amnesty International as Louis Jodel Chamblain and Jackson Joanis have been acquitted of the 1993 murder of Antoine Izmery, a pro-democracy activist and business man. The trial has been hastily set up in a special session of the criminal court in Port-au-Prince and the verdict was reached within a day of the hearing.
