Two hundred years after Haitians overthrew slavery and colonialism, human rights abuses are on the rise. Political division and violence, impunity and the reduction in international support worsen this situation, Amnesty International said while launching an action plan for human rights in Haiti.

After a short lived lull in the number of children murdered over the past two months, 35 children and youth were senselessly murdered in November of 2003 in Honduras. Since January of 1998, Casa Alianza has documented 2,089 extrajudicial murders of children and youth under the age of 23 in Honduras, one of Central America’s poorest countries.

Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo succeed in restoring identity of 75 children of the disappeared during the dictatorship. This is an organization was created in 1977 with the sole purpose of finding the children who were born in the centers of detention and were handed over to families linked to the dictatorship.

Nearly 24 years ago, one of Central America's most famous clandestine stations began broadcasting from southern El Salvador. Radio Venceremos and its sister clandestine station, Radio Farabundo Martí, were on the air for over a decade and played a key role in El Salvador's civil war.
