According to a recent study, tigers have lost nearly 40% of their habitat and are now on the brink of extinction. The big cats can, however, be saved with international, national and local cooperation says a study ‘Setting Priorities for the Conservation and Recovery of Wild Tigers: 2005-2015’, released on July 20, 2006.

The Goletta Verde (Green Schooner) Campaign, implemented by Italian environmental NGO Legambiente will visit Albania, July 24-26, 2006. The visit, that will cover Saranda and “Butrint” National Park, is a part of the journey that touched other Mediterranean countries (France, Spain, Tunisia, Algeria, Italy, Greece, Albania and Croazia), to promote marine and coastal parks and raise citizens’ awareness on the need to protect a crucial resource for millions of people, the Mediterranean Sea.

Despite unprecedented growth in recent years, the world economy has not only failed to take care of the planet and its health, but also the basic needs of billions of its inhabitants, most of whom are condemned to live in slums with no safe water to drink, according to a new study released by a U.S.-based independent think tank.

Alustavien tietojen mukaan Suomen merikotkapesinnät vähenivät hieman viime vuodesta. Todettuja poikasia on tänä vuonna 237, kun viime vuonna luku oli 252. Lähes kaikki poikaset on rengastettu pesällään. WWF aloitti lajin seurannan jo 1973, jolloin poikasia kuoriutui vain viisi.

A great international protest against the planned construction of two LNG (Liquid Natural Gas) terminals near Trieste were held on July 1 in this North Adriatic city. The two terminals are to be located in the open sea, near the sear boundary with Slovenia, while the other will be built inland.

THERE used to be a dire prediction that Nepal was going to become desert. This seemed quite logical amid a dangerous phenomenon occurring then in which the crucial forest cover was going through a massive clearance for fuelwood, fodder and money-earning timber. But despite the foretelling of the worst, nothing of the dire scale happened. The conservation successes of Nepal proved the dangerous prediction false.

The Natural Resources Information System (NRIS) encompasses information on natural resources related to land, water, forests, minerals, soils etc. and socio-economic information such as demographic data, amenities, infrastructure etc. The integration of these sets of data would aid the decision making process for systematic resource utilisation and also aid sustainable development goals.
