Small salt producers in the Indian western state of Rajasthan are partnering NGOs and the government in the campaign against iodine deficiency disorders. According to the WFP, Nawa now produces iodised salt as per the national standard.

The World Food Programme invites the online community to raise awareness on global hunger by participating in an international short video contest. The five most compelling clips, between 30-60 seconds in length, will be webcast through YouTube.

A report by the United Nations World Food Programme, released ahead of World AIDS Day on 1 December, highlights links between hunger, poor health and HIV/AIDS. Life-saving drugs are more effective when people are well nourished and healthy, the report says.

Food and Agricultural Organization’s latest prediction of high global prices of cereals in the coming year has led to debates on future prices of agricultural commodities in both rich and poor trading countries. With growing demand for food, feed and industrial use – many countries will pay more for importing cereals than they did before, even though they are expected to import less, the report says.

FreeRice, an innovative internet-based vocabulary game is helping mobilise millions of people in the fight against global hunger. For every correct answer, the site donates ten grains of rice to the World Food Programme. One billion grains of rice have been donated in the last one month – enough to feed more than 50,000 people for one day.

The UN and World Food Programme (WFP) have warned of humanitarian crises in central-west, central and northeastern Afghanistan if food does not reach people before winter. About 400,000 people are in urgent need of food aid before heavy snow blocks up the mountainous regions.
